The older brother of former Washington Huskies star and Arizona Cardinals Pro Bowl safety Budda Baker was shot and killed in Seattle early Sunday.
Robert Baker, 29, was gunned down around 1:45 a.m. on Sunday, according to reports. He was pronounced dead on the way to the hospital after resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful.
Baker's death remains under investigation.
Budda Baker released a statement on behalf of his family via Twitter this evening.
"On behalf of the Baker Family we want to thank everyone for their generous outpouring of love, support, and prayers during this extremely difficult time at the passing of our dearly beloved son, brother and husband, Robert Baker," he tweeted. "We ask that you respect our family's privacy in this difficult time."
Budda Baker's relationship with his brother was profiled by Sports Illustrated during his final year at Washington in 2016. The story detailed how the brothers remained close during Robert Baker's seven-year prison term for first-degree robbery and possession of a firearm.
"I learned life can be taken away from you in two ways: death or prison," Robert said in the piece. "I'm lucky it was prison, because death was around the corner."
That particular quote is haunting when you read it now. RIP to Robert Baker, and our thoughts are with his family and friends.
