Both have come a long way since then, with McVay eventually leading the Rams to a Super Bowl. Back on the same field again, Gruden and his former protege shared a handshake – one that went viral.
Gruden appears to be getting the better of the handshake, pulling McVay’s hand in close. The Raiders coach also found an interesting place for his watch, on the outside of his long sleeve shirt.

McVay might be the more successful coach right now, but the Rams coach made it clear he “knew nothing” when he was a member of Gruden’s staff.
“What I remember is I knew nothing,” McVay said via the Tampa Bay Times about working under Gruden. “The majority of things I really learned were at the (Florida Fired Coaches Association) working with Jon and then going and coaching in the United Football League.”
“I came in that one season and had a great experience with the Bucs, but I was really just showing a willingness to do anything. I was really more of a secretary than an actual coach, but I was fortunate to be around a lot of great guys.”
The Rams and Raiders will face off in a preseason game on Saturday night.
