The early days of NFL free agency a few weeks back saw dozens of players get big-time contracts. But there are still stud free agents available - and one stands out from the crowd.

In a feature for, analyst Gregg Rosenthal named defensive back Tyrann Mathieu as his top free agent still remaining. He believes that Mathieu is set for a third "big, long-term deal" and credited the late Chris Wesseling with identifying what a star he would be.

"This is my second year making this list without my great friend Chris Wesseling, and I heard his voice so clearly after I initially ranked Mathieu lower. It's hard to put a price on the intelligence, competitiveness and coverage ability Honey Badger brings, but those traits explain how he's set to get the third big, long-term deal of his career, despite being an undersized safety drafted in the third round. Wess was early to see Mathieu's ferocious, versatile style for the transformative force that it was. Like so many people who crossed paths with Wess over the years, Mathieu returned the love.

Mathieu has spent the last three seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs. He made two Pro Bowls and was a two-time First-Team All-Pro and helped them win a Super Bowl in 2019.

Tyrann Mathieu has done a great job of staying healthy throughout his NFL career. He's missed just two games in the last five years playing a position that often lends itself to injury.

But NFL teams are reluctant to give him a long-term deal thus far. Perhaps it's because Mathieu plays safety and probably wants top safety money...

There are plenty of teams that could benefit from bringing Mathieu into the fold. It remains to be seen if he has the interest in them.

Is Tyrann Mathieu the top NFL free agent right now?
