There will be a spring football league starting in 2017.

Update: According to Jason La Canfora, the league is not being sanctioned by the NFL, as previously reported. It will not be affiliated with the league:

Earlier: The NFL will institute a spring league for the spring of 2017, according to SiriusXM NFL Radio. There have been several rumors hinting that the NFL was thinking about creating a D-League, much like the NBA. Questions abounded, most of them centering around how it would impact college football players. According to SiriusXM NFL Radio, the NFL will have a spring league that will consist of veteran free agents.

The NFL seems to have answered the questions regarding college athletes, stipulating that the spring league teams will be comprised of veteran free agents. However, this opens the door for undrafted free agents, or players released by NFL teams.

A spring league makes sense for the NFL, as it currently doesn't play any games past February.

Which players will comprise each team? How will this affect other sports? Will anyone watch?

There are plenty of questions, but only time will tell if this is a good move by the NFL.
