NFL Fans React To News Of Brock Purdy Injury

The San Francisco 49ers revealed concerning news about Brock Purdy.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters Wednesday that Purdy has entered the concussion protocol. The starting quarterback began experiencing symptoms on the plane ride home after Monday night's 22-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

Onlookers are already looking ahead to the possibility of Sam Darnold replacing Purdy against the Cincinnati Bengals this Sunday.

"This is not good news on a short week," Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports noted.

"Oooooh boy. Sam Darnold show upcoming?" Rob Guerrera asked.

"If I have to watch Sam Darnold line up at QB on Sunday I’m gonna lose my mind," a 49ers fan grumbled.

Purdy didn't miss a beat from his improbable rookie breakout when leading San Francisco to a 5-0 start this season. The No. 262 pick didn't throw a pick in any of the five victories, accounting for 11 touchdowns and a 72.1 completion percentage.

However, the 23-year-old experienced his first adversity as an NFL starter when the top-rated Cleveland Browns defense bottled him to 125 passing yards on 27 throws in a Week 6 upset. Purdy completed 21 of 30 passes for 272 yards and a touchdown on Monday, but he tossed two picks in a game for the first time in his career.

Purdy nevertheless still ranks second to Tua Tagovailoa in yards per attempt (8.6) and quarterback rating (107.2). His 75.6 QBR only trails Patrick Mahomes.

Losing Purdy would be another costly blow to a 49ers offense that played without Deebo Samuel and Trent Williams in Week 7. Since they traded Trey Lance to the Dallas Cowboys, Darnold would presumably play if Purdy isn't cleared for Sunday's marquee matchup against Cincinnati.
