NFL free agency is just around the corner and every pundit is trying to predict where the top available players will land. The top offensive free agent this year is Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell, who comes with a high price tag that few teams can meet. One NFL insider believes he knows exactly where Bell is going next year.
In an article for The Washington Post, NFL insider John Clayton revealed that the New York Jets are expected to make the largest offer to Bell. He did note, however, that the Jets could face a bidding war with the Baltimore Ravens for Bell’s services.
“But like last year, when they were willing to offer the biggest contract in free agency to Kirk Cousins, only to see him sign with the Minnesota Vikings, the Jets should offer the largest deal to land Bell. Don’t be surprised, however, if the Baltimore Ravens get into the Bell bidding.”
The Jets are certainly a reasonable pick to win the Le’Veon Bell sweepstakes. The team has the second-most cap space in the league with a projected $91 million in cap, per OverTheCap.
Given how high Bell’s price tag is expected to be, only a team with a huge pile of money at its disposal can likely afford Bell while plugging other holes.
Of course, it was only a year ago that Bell said it would cost the Jets $100 million for him to play for them. While they may not be able to reach that particular price tag, there’s little doubt the Jets are probably closer to his range than most teams.
Bell did not play in 2018 as he sat out the season while seeking a new contract.
In 2017, he led the league in rushing attempts with 321 while going for 1,291 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground. He added an extra dimension through the air with a career-high 85 receptions and 655 receiving yards.
