Earlier this week it was reported that former Oklahoma star Kyler Murray was on the list of non-roster invites to training camp for the Oakland Athletics. Murray signed a deal with the A's that would allow him to play football for the Sooners this season before joining the team for the 2019 season.
However, after Murray's Heisman-winning campaign, he entered his name into the NFL draft and could end up taking his talents to the gridiron rather than the baseball diamond.
Despite Murray entering his name into the NFL draft, Oakland A's manager Bob Melvin said he expects to see Murray at spring training.
Per Janie McCauley of the Associated Press, Melvin had the following to say about Murray.
But at this point in time we haven’t heard anything different and I’m expecting him to be in spring training. If something changes in the meantime then we deal with it.
Murray has the potential to become a first round pick in the 2019 NFL draft. If he heads to the NFL, Murray would have to return the $4.7 million signing bonus he received in June from the A's.
The first workout for position players for the Athletics is set for February 16, while the NFL scouting Combine kicks off on February 26.
