With the regular season almost here, the New England Patriots received some concerning news involving veteran safety Patrick Chung. The three-time champion will have to appear in court next Wednesday to be arraigned on a charge of cocaine possession.

Chung has turned into a key contributor for the Patriots. His leadership and experience are two attributes that Bill Belichick values greatly.

However, the current predicament that Chung is in doesn't bode well as the season opener approaches fairly soon.

Back in June, Chung allegedly had cocaine in his possession. A Belknap County grand jury indicted Chung on drug charges at the start of August.

The Patriots most likely saw this coming since the initial incident happened months ago.

New England's representation hasn't commented on the matter yet.

Additional details from Chung's arrest can be seen here.

Last season, Chung had 84 tackles and an interception for the Patriots. The defense does have depth to replace him in the event that he misses time on the field.

Chung is under contract until 2021 due to an extension he signed back in April. It'd be shocking if the team decided to move on from him.

New England will host Pittsburgh to start the 2019 season.
