Patrick Mahomes Almost Lost Lombardi Trophy During Super Bowl Parade
It's been a rough few years for the Lombardi Trophy. Rob Gronkowski used it to bunt at a Red Sox game, giving the trophy a baseball-sized dent in 2019. Two years later, Tom Brady nearly threw it into a river.
Patrick Mahomes is the latest NFL star to have a Super Bowl-sized trophy mishap.
While taking pictures with fans at the Chiefs' Super Bowl parade, the quarterback handed the Lombardi Trophy to a fan. Seemingly caught up in the moment, Mahomes turned around to walk away, but left the hardware in the hands of the lucky fan.
The league MVP made several heads-up plays this season, but this wasn't one of them.
Or was it?
According to the Daily Mail, Mahomes was actually returning a replica version of the trophy to its owner, Vinnie Garofalo.
"[Mahomes] joined in, took the trophy, walked around with it for a bit, handed it to Kadarius Toney and then walked it back over and took a selfie with me and then left," says the Chiefs fan.
"That's pretty much exactly what happened," Garofalo said. "It was a pretty awesome fan moment for sure."
It often feels like Mahomes has a sixth sense on the field. Maybe that perception extends to parade routes too.
