Former NFL Executive: Trey Lance Might Be Third-String Quarterback
Former NFL general manager Michael Lombardi just can't stop ripping apart 49ers quarterback Trey Lance.
Earlier this week, Lombardi made some insensitive remarks when talking about Lance's instincts under center.
"As you go down this road with Lance, it just becomes harder and harder and harder, and you can show all the clips of him moving and all that stuff. At the end of the day when his momma lifted him from the crib, he just didn’t have that quarterback instinct," Lombardi said.
During an appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show," Lombardi decided to double down on his comments.
"I'll stand by what I said. I've watched the tape and I've seen Trey Lance play...it doesn't come," Lombardi told McAfee. "Bill Walsh used to say, "The quarterback's arm must be tied to his feet.' There must be symmetry to his play."
Lombardi also hinted that he doesn't believe Lance is a backup quarterback at this stage in his career.
"I'm just saying what I see and I don't think he's gonna be No. 2 for the 49ers."
Ouch.
Lance hasn't lived up to the hype - there's no doubt about it - but he also hasn't played enough organized football.
Perhaps a change of scenery is what Lance needs to reach his potential. After all, it doesn't seem like the 49ers have any interest in starting him.
