Pete Carroll: 'The Opportunity Is Still Open' For Colin Kaepernick To Join Seahawks
Colin Kaepernick Seahawks update: there is still a chance that the former 49ers quarterback could wind up in Seattle. Head coach Pete Carroll was asked about the controversy surrounding the quarterback and the team last week. It didn't exactly sound like an impending move, but he did leave the door open.
Kaepernick was reportedly set to work out with the Seahawks. He has not been on an NFL roster since after the 2016 season, when he began his national anthem protest. Even opportunities to work out for teams over the last year-plus have been scarce.
According to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, the workout was "postponed," and it doesn't sound like there is a new timetable set. The bone of contention was, of course, his continued protest.
Schefter's main counterpart, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, had a different report on the details. He said that the issue was that Kaep does "not have a firm plan" on how to proceed with regard to the protest.
Either way, it sounds like the idea that he may continue to kneel during the national anthem is a hang-up. The Seahawks, often cited as one of the more forward-thinking and politically outspoken franchises in the league, potentially nixing Kaepernick's workout doesn't bode well for his prospects elsewhere.
It is also an interesting event given his ongoing lawsuit against the league. Kaepernick is alleging that NFL franchises are colluding to keep him out of football because of his protests.
Now, Pete Carroll says the Colin Kaepernick Seahawks story may not be done.
The News Tribune Seahawks beat writer Gregg Bell spoke to Carroll about the issue. Via Twitter:
The day after Schefter's report about Kaepernick's postponed workout dropped, the team signed quarterback Stephen Morris. Morris has never taken a snap in an NFL game, through four seasons.
Kaepernick has thrown for over 12,000 yards, 72 touchdowns, and 30 interceptions, and has 2,300 rushing yards and another 13 scores on the ground. He has led a team to the Super Bowl, and been to another NFC Championship Game. In his final year with the Niners, he threw for 16 touchdowns and just four interceptions in 12 games after returning from injury, and posted the third-best QB rating of his career, despite playing for a depleted, rebuilding roster.
