Steelers Announce Their Decision On Mitch Trubisky
After showing promise in his rookie season, it appears that Kenny Pickett will be the starting quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers going forward. With the first-round pick firmly planted as the team's starter, the attention turns to backup Mitch Trubisky.
On Tuesday, the Steelers made their plans for Trubisky clear.
According to ESPN's Brooke Pryor, Steelers general manager Omar Khan says the team wants to keep Trubisky on the roster, even past this upcoming season.
Trubisky is under contract with the Steelers through the 2023 season, and will be an unrestricted free agent in 2024. Trubisky signed a two-year deal with the Steelers, emerging as the team's starter to open the season.
The former No. 2 overall pick began the year as Pittsburgh's starter before injuries forced rookie Kenny Pickett into the role.
Pickett played well as the season went on, nearly leading the Steelers to the playoffs over the final few weeks of the season. The team seems to be committed to developing young talent like Pickett and wide receiver George Pickens.
Trubisky began his career as a No. 2 overall pick by the Chicago Bears, selected ahead of quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson. After leaving Chicago, he played one season for the Bills in 2021 as Josh Allen's backup.
