Baker Mayfield Listed As Non-Participant For Monday Practice
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a short week to prepare for the Buffalo Bills. They released a concerning injury report ahead of their Thursday Night Football matchup.
While they didn't hold practice Monday, the Buccaneers estimated that Baker Mayfield would have missed it with a knee injury.
Wide receiver Chris Godwin (neck), guard Matt Feiler (knee), defensive tackle Vita Vea (groin), and safety (Kaevon Merriweather) were also listed as DNPs.
In the midst of a resurgent season, Mayfield has a career-high 65.2 completion percentage and 89.2 quarterback rating. A Buccaneers team expected to vie for the No. 1 pick is instead in the thick of a tight NFC South race.
However, they lost first place and fell to 3-3 with a 16-13 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. Mayfield completed 27 of 42 passes for 275 yards, a touchdown, and an interception.
The former No. 1 pick has thrown a pick in four straight games, three Tampa Bay losses in which the team scored 30 combined points.
Kyle Trask would presumably start if Mayfield can't play Thursday night. The 25-year-old spent most of the summer in a QB1 battle with Mayfield to replace the retired Tom Brady.
The 2021 third-round pick completed three of nine passes for 23 yards in a brief NFL debut to close the 2022 regular season. Trask has yet to start an NFL game.
A road game at Buffalo will be a tough assignment for either quarterback, as the Bills also must bounce back from Sunday's disappointing loss to the New England Patriots after narrowly defeating the New York Giants.
More news on Mayfield's status would become available before Prime Video's Thursday Night Football game.
