Earlier Sunday evening, it was reported that Missouri Tiger defensive end Michael Sam, an NFL draft-hopeful, had come out as gay.
The NFL didn't waste anytime in responding to the news of the All-American and SEC Defensive Player of the Year coming out. Projected as a third or fourth round prospect, the league knows that Sam is going to lace 'em up on Sundays and did the right thing by opening him with open arms.
Here is what the NFL had to say on the matter:
"We admire Michael Sam's honesty and courage. Michael is a football player. Any player with ability and determination can succeed in the NFL. We look forward to welcoming and supporting Michael Sam in 2014."
Hopefully the sentiment of the NFL's statement is mirrored both by the organizations that may or may not draft Sam and also by his future teammates.
