New England has been quite busy over the past few days, making several trades and cuts. One of the biggest surprises from the defending champions came today when they made an interesting decision involving Demaryius Thomas.

Thomas spent the majority of the offseason recovering from a torn Achilles. He showed that he can still be a factor in the team's preseason finale with seven receptions for 87 yards and two touchdowns.

Despite shining on Thursday for New England, the veteran wideout is now going to hit the open market.

According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the Patriots are releasing Thomas.

It's shocking to see New England move on from Thomas since he's a strong veteran presence for its locker room. On the other hand, the AFC powerhouse has a plethora of receiving options.

With Josh Gordon, Julian Edelman and N'Keal Harry poised for a multitude of targets, the Patriots may have felt that Thomas' role would be minimal.

The Patriots usually make a few surprising roster cuts each year so this isn't the most shocking transaction of the weekend. But it does leave fans wondering why he didn't remain in Foxborough.

We'll find out soon enough if Thomas can sign with another team prior to Week 1.
