Todd McShay Disagrees With Carson Beck's 2025 NFL Draft Decision

Todd McShay thinks Carson Beck made the wrong move by declaring for the 2025 NFL Draft.

Beck, who underwent surgery on his throwing elbow last week, announced his intentions to enter next year's draft on Saturday. He injured his ulnar collateral ligament in Georgia's SEC Championship Game win over Texas and won't play in the College Football Playoff.

On his new show with The Ringer, McShay said Beck should have used his sixth year of college eligibility.

"Carson Beck made a bad decision to leave early," McShay said.

One scout called Beck's choice "foolish" in a text message to McShay. ESPN's former draft guru believes the senior should have returned to bolster his 2026 stock after throwing 12 interceptions this season.

"I thought he got better late in the season, but I don't think he's there yet," McShay said. "Played great in certain moments. I thought he played better late in the season, but he never this year played to the level that many of us expected him to play to. I just don't know that he's ready."

McShay feels it would have made sense for Beck to recover from his elbow injury and return to what he sees as a bolstered supporting cast in Athens. He claimed other talent evaluators share that perspective.

"Is he as ready as he would be had he gone back for one more year at Georgia?" McShay asked. "Everyone I talked to, and my personal opinion is he's not going to be."

McShay's former colleague, Mel Kiper Jr., ranked Beck alongside Shedeur Sanders among the top quarterbacks in the 2025 class to start the college football season. At the end of October, Kiper called it "iffy" that Beck would go in the first round.

Recent draft rankings also suggest he's more likely a Day 2 or 3 selection. CBS Sports ranks Beck as its No. 55 overall prospect and fifth quarterback. ESPN has him at No. 63, and he's 109th on Pro Football Focus.

Gunner Stockton will start for Georgia against Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl this Wednesday.
