Tony Romo Got Roasted For Singing During CBS' Thanksgiving Game
There's always plenty of pomp and circumstance plus a fair deal of advertising during the NFL's Thanksgiving Day games. But CBS broadcaster Tony Romo's efforts to do a little singing during the broadcast is getting panned pretty hard.
Coming back from a commercial break in the second quarter, Jim Nantz started talking about the new Lion King movie, which the network was advertising. After a brief pause before the play, Romo breaks out trying to sing the oft-mispronounced Zulu lyrics from the iconic Lion King song "Circle of Life." As with most people who try to sing the song, it falls a little flat, but for Romo it fell completely flat.
Fans on social media have been tearing into Romo, calling him all kinds of names and insults over his singing:
"Does anyone know why (he) sounds worse than a 50 year smoker?" one user replied.
"I didn’t have Tony Romo singing the sorrows of the Bears QB on my Thanksgiving bingo card," wrote another.
"Tony Romo singing The Circle of Life is going to haunt my dreams," a third wrote.
Harsh. But that's why Romo is an NFL broadcaster on CBS and not a halftime show performer.
"Circle of Life" is one of the most iconic movie soundtrack songs of all-time. Composed by the legendary Elton John and Hans Zimmer, it was even nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song. The opening of that song is a set of lyrics in the Zulu language performed by Lebo M, and most people get them wrong unless they've actually read them.
What's crazy is that this isn't even the first time he's tried singing during a football game. He's done so during the Super Bowl, singing some Adele lyrics in-between snaps.
If he's going to keep on trying this and subjecting millions to his voice, the least he can do is get some lessons. Heaven knows he can afford it.
