A veteran NFL wide receiver is being released heading into the 2019 offseason. The San Francisco 49ers will be parting ways with Pierre Garcon.
Garcon, 32, has one year left on his contract with the 49ers, but it's a team option. NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo is reporting that San Francisco will not be picking up that option.
Garcon will now be a free agent. This could work out well for him, as the 2019 free agent wide receiver class doesn't have a ton of depth.
"Garçon will be a free agent in a WR class that’s not very deep," Garafolo reports.
Garcon, a former sixth round NFL Draft pick, caught 24 passes for 286 yards and 1 touchdown for the 49ers last season.
The former Mount Union standout began his career with the Indianapolis Colts, playing for them from 2008-11. He then played for the Washington Redskins from 2012-16 and has been with the San Francisco 49ers for two seasons.
It's unclear at this point which NFL teams might be interested in Garcon heading into free agency.
