Marcus Mariota Named Starting Quarterback For Oregon Ducks

Chip Kelly thinks the redshirt freshman can run the offense effectively.

@GoDucks: Oregon head coach Chip Kelly has named redshirt freshman Marcus Mariota as the Ducks' new starting quarterback #GoDucks

Mariota beat out sophomore Bryan Bennett for the starting spot, which may have surprised some fans considering Bennett's productivity in limited action in 2011. In eight games in 2011, Bennett threw for 369 yards with six touchdowns and zero interceptions.

But while Bennett may be a more polished passer, the top-end athleticism of Mariota earned him the right to start. Ducks fans hope that he can follow in Darron Thomas' footsteps, and lead fifth-ranked Oregon to great things.
