Dallas (Tex.) Jesuit four-star running back EJ Smith will be playing his college ball in the Pac-12. He announced his commitment to Stanford moments ago on ESPN2.
Smith, the son of NFL Hall of Fame running back Emmitt Smith, chose the Cardinal over Florida (his dad’s alma mater), Texas A&M, Georgia and Ohio State. He visited all five programs this fall, seeing Stanford on the final weekend of November.
“Stanford has a great football program. It also has a great academic program,” Smith said on ESPN2. “That was kind of the big factor in it…I saw that Stanford was the best opportunity.”

Despite a down season, Stanford landed a major coup by plucking Smith away from other power programs. The 5-foot-11, 199-pound recruit is the No. 3 all-purpose back in the 2020 class and the No. 23 senior in the state of Texas.
Overall, 247Sports’ Composite Rankings lists Smith as the No. 144 prospect in the 2020 recruiting cycle.
“He’s starting his own legacy,” Emmitt Smith told ESPN.
