The Oklahoma City Thunder have already lost Kevin Durant, a major blow against the franchise’s NBA title aspirations. According to Bleacher Report NBA Insider Howard Beck, thought around the league is that Russell Westbrook is the next to head out of OKC, and that general manager Sam Presti, who traded James Harden and Serge Ibaka before they could leave without the Thunder getting something in return, may do the same with the All-Star point guard.
In a video for Bleacher Report, Beck also posits that the Boston Celtics are viewed as a likely destination. Brad Stevens has turned a roster that doesn’t look great on paper into a regular playoff team without a true superstar, and the team has plenty of assets after fleecing the Brooklyn Nets in the Paul Pierce/Kevin Garnett trade years ago.
“Boston has been loading up on assets, a ton of picks including all those great picks from the Brooklyn Nets. They’ve got a bunch of young players. They have the ability to create a package that could get Westbrook there without giving up key pieces. They could still have Isaiah Thomas, Al Horford who they just signed, hold onto Jae Crowder presumably, and add Westbrook to that.”
Boston could add Westbrook and leap into that second tier of teams in the Eastern Conference behind the Cleveland Cavaliers. If they think that they can keep him long-term, it would be quite the blockbuster deal by the storied franchise.
