After a breakout season at Oklahoma, quarterback Caleb Williams entered the transfer portal and came out at USC - reunited with head coach Lincoln Riley. But the Trojans weren't exactly predestined to land the star quarterback.

In a recent interview with SI's Ross Dellenger, Williams' father Carl Williams revealed that USC was actually one of three to four finalists. It came down to USC, UCLA and Wisconsin with Ole Miss having some appeal due to Lane Kiffin.

Carl Williams said that while Kiffin really stood out to him, he just couldn't see his son going to Ole Miss. Were Kiffin at a different program, that school might have had a shot. But the family wanted Caleb to focus on his NFL preparation, not changing the trajectory of a program.

“Lane Kiffin was fun. I liked Lane,” Carl said, via SI.com. “It was going to be tough for us to go to Mississippi. Other guys were trying to put on a show. ‘You can change the trajectory of our program!’ Dude, we don’t care about your trajectory, the school colors and buildings. It’s who can get this kid ready for the NFL.”

Caleb Williams took over the Oklahoma Sooners starting job in the middle of the 2021 season during the Red River Showdown. His two touchdown passes in the second half helped lift the team to a win over their arch-rivals.

Williams would go on to go 5-2 as a starter, finishing the season with 1,912 passing yards and 21 touchdowns with four interceptions. His season finished with an Alamo Bowl win over Oregon.

But after Lincoln Riley abruptly jumped ship for USC, Williams entered the transfer portal.

He's now set to lead the Trojans into a new era. Perhaps that will culminate in him being a top pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
