Interim coach Clay Helton is 4-1 since taking over for Steve Sarkisian, but there are many who believe that USC won't be giving him the full-time gig after the season. Friday, Fox Sports radio host Colin Cowherd added a bit of fuel to that fire on his radio show, claiming to know that the Trojans are targeting a "big" name.
Here's a link to the podcast of Cowherd's show. The segment in question comes around the 54-minute mark. We've transcribed it below:
"We've heard nothing on USC, right? Like nothing. USC is right now the best job available in the country in college, and there's nothing out there, right? And the feeling has been that if Clay Helton can beat Oregon tomorrow - that's a good game - at Oregon tomorrow, I don't think they will. And if they can beat UCLA which I think they can this year. But if they can win tomorrow, it would be hard not to give Clay Helton the gig.
But there's feelings from boosters, they want big game - big game hunting. So I was told last night the reason the USC job opening - that you've heard no names for - is that it is such a big name, and I know what the name is - it is such a big name, that that person has said "If I hear anything, I'm out." That's the story.
I didn't say I had it confirmed, I'm just telling you that the name I heard is so big and they are loading up the Brinks truck and they're going to pay what they've never paid - double Pete Carroll. But that person has said "If I sniff a thing, I'm not interested."
We're not going to throw out any names here. We imagine there will be enough of that around the college sports world Friday night.
