Clay Helton and the USC Trojans desperately need to improve defensively next season. To try and do so, USC is reportedly hiring one of the top defensive assistants in the Pac-12.
The Trojans are reportedly set to hire Oregon cornerbacks coach Donte Williams for the same position in addition to being the defensive passing game coordinator, according to Bruce Feldman. Williams has been an integral piece of Mario Cristobal’s staff in Eugene. On paper, this is a massive hire for Helton and the Trojans.
Williams is both a terrific coach and elite recruiter. The former Oregon assistant has wrangled in some of the Ducks’ top-rated recruits over the past few years. His primary recruiting efforts came in Southern California.
USC, which has had astonishingly poor recruiting success the past few seasons, now has one of the best recruiters in the Pac-12 on its staff. Williams should be able to help the Trojans have much better results with in-state recruits.
SOURCES: #Oregon CB coach Donte Williams is expected to become the new corners coach & Pass Game Coordinator at #USC, sources tell me and @AntonioCMorales. Williams was 247Sports’ No. 7 ranked recruiter in the country this year. Big move by the Trojans staff and their new brass.

This is the type of hire that can help get things turned around at USC. It will most certainly help the Trojans defense.
As for Cristobal and the Ducks, this a huge loss at the moment. But Cristobal’s proven he’s not just an elite recruiter of players, but of coaches as well.
It’ll be interesting to see not only how USC improves with Williams on the staff, but also who Cristobal and the Ducks hire as a replacement.
