Nike is having a good time with the fact that Washington wide receiver John Ross broke the 40-yard dash record in its cleats.
Before the NFL Scouting Combine, adidas announced that it would give anyone who could break the nine-year old Chris Johnson record of 4.24 second in its cleats a private island. As Deadspin astutely points out, the devil was in the details, and it wound up being more of a publicity grab for adidas than something that it was ever going to be held to, but still, it probably wishes that Ross had signed up for the opportunity.
Instead, Ross is on Team Nike, and ran his 4.22 40-yard dash with the swoosh on his feet.
Nike Football had a troll-tastic tweet all lined up for Ross’ record performance, saying he’s on “an island all by (him)self.”

On an island all by yourself.
Record. Broken. ⏱?

As far as brand-on-brand Twitter snark goes, it doesn’t get any better than that.
Ross isn’t just a burner, the dude can ball too. This year at Washington, he caught 81 passes for 1,150 yards and 17 touchdowns, and was the most explosive players on a Huskies team that made a run to the College Football Playoff. His NFL Draft stock has to be extremely high today, after his electric combine performance.
