Earlier this week, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart pulled off a major coup by luring a vital piece of the Alabama coaching staff away from Tuscaloosa. Longtime strength coach Scott Cochran decided to leave Alabama for a rival program.
According to to AL.com’s Matt Zenitz, Cochran left to become the special teams coordinator for the Georgia Bulldogs. He has a previous relationship with Georgia head coach – and former Alabama defensive coordinator – Kirby Smart.
Following the news of Cochran’s departure, an Alabama insider suggested the timing of the hiring is suspect. Aaron Suttles of the Athletic said this isn’t the first time Smart has tried “subterfuge” against Alabama.
He brought up a story of when Smart first left Alabama to become the head coach at Georgia. Suttles said Smart took a picture of the Crimson Tide’s recruiting board to show recruits and lure them away from Nick Saban and company.
Here’s what he said, via Saturday Down South:
“It’s not the first time he’s done subterfuge with Alabama. He famously took a picture of their recruiting board when he left Alabama to work for Georgia and sent it to recruits to show them, hey, you’re not that high on Alabama’s recruiting board.”
It’s not the first time this story has popped up in the national spotlight.
Last year, ESPN’s Paul Finebaum brought up the rumor that Smart used the board against Alabama. It was a move that sent Smart’s relationship with Saban spiraling – as could be expected.
Did Smart hire Cochran away from the Tide to mess with Saban?
