Although Georgia is listed as the favorite to land five-star recruit Arik Gilbert, the Bulldogs will have competition from other top schools as well. He projects as a tight end at the college level, yet the do-it-all athlete will have tons of offers because of his ability to play both sides of the football.
Once again Alabama and Georgia are battling it out for conference supremacy. However, this time around it will come down to the recruiting powers of Nick Saban and Kirby Smart, not their ability to strategize from the sidelines.
The Crimson Tide and the Bulldogs have competed for top recruits in the past, which isn't shocking when you consider how successful both programs have been in recent years.
While Gilbert might be enticed to play for Georgia because its close to his hometown of Marietta, the potential-packed prospect did visit with Alabama over the weekend.
Gilbert also took the trip to Athens on Monday to get a better sense of the program.
From Saturday Down South:
The Georgia native publicly announced he was visiting Tuscaloosa over the weekend and did the same upon his arrival to Athens on Monday. It’s interesting on many levels that the nation’s top athlete would visit both schools in a three-day span but it’s not hard to imagine Kirby Smart and his Georgia staff inviting Gilbert to campus in order to cool any and all momentum Nick Saban and his Alabama staff may have gained over the weekend during Gilbert’s trip to Tuscaloosa.
He is listed as the No. 9 overall recruit in the class of 2020, per 247Sports.
Auburn, Ohio State and Notre Dame are also among the elite programs offering a scholarship to Gilbert. It's safe to say he'll be coveted by every coach in the nation.
This recruiting war between titans could take a drastic turn if Alabama could land the best recruit from the state of Georgia.
