Last night, Alabama put the finishing touches on the 2020 college football season by blowing out Ohio State in the national championship game. It was as impressive of a performance that we’ve seen from Nick Saban’s squad.
Now that college football is officially entering the offseason, ESPN has released its final Football Power Index rankings. As we all expected, Alabama is at the top by a convincing margin.
For those that don’t remember, the FPI is considered a “measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team’s performance going forward for the rest of the season.”
Unlike traditional rankings, the FPI usually grades teams on a different scale. While teams like Notre Dame and Texas A&M are well inside the top six for the final AP Poll, the FPI actually has Oklahoma and Georgia ranked above them.
Here’s how the top 25 looks for ESPN’s FPI:
- Ohio State
- Notre Dame
- Texas A&M
- Iowa State
- Oklahoma State
- Arizona State
- Penn State
- North Carolina
It’s bizarre to see Texas as high as No. 6 for the final FPI rankings. That being said, the program has a bright future ahead of itself with Steve Sarkisian at the helm.
