ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit Comments On Alabama’s Starting QB Situation

ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit gave his opinion on who will be Alabama's starting quarterback this season.

At this point in the preseason, junior Cooper Bateman and freshmen Blake Barnett and Jalen Hurts are the contenders for the position.

In January, SEC Country predicted that Barnett would land the starting job while Bateman worked as reserve. Former Crimson Tide quarterback and 2009 championship winner Greg McElroy agreed. With preseason practices now underway, head coach Nick Saban gave no indication that one player was more superior, as he told reporters that all three quarterbacks impressed.

However, the team - especially tight end O.J. Howard - wants a leader in the locker room, not just a playmaker on the field. So, who will he be, according to one of the nation's most-reliable analysts?

Well it's not "he" - it's "they."

When asked about the starter quarterback on Twitter, Herbstreit tweeted out to his followers:

">August 18, 2016

But which of the three will be the alternating starters? Herbstreit continued:

">August 18, 2016

Interestingly, many Alabama players already tabbed Bateman as the front-runner for the job based on his experience. As a junior, he is the only contender for the position who has actually played in a college game.

Although Alabama’s opener against USC is now less than three weeks away, the Tide isn’t panicked about naming a starter right away. It's likely we won't know who lands the gig until mere days before kickoff.
