College football is right around the corner, and today, ESPN rolled out "The Herbies," the preseason awards doled out by lead analyst Kirk Herbstreit.
Herbstreit gives awards for everything from breakout players to the best local hotels and restaurants to college football towns.
He also gave some predictions for the upcoming season.
Kirk Herbstreit's SEC Championship prediction probably won't surprise anyone.
Down in the SEC, he has a national title game rematch set to hit Atlanta. Herbstreit predicts that Alabama will defeat Georgia for the conference crown, en route to yet another College Football Playoff bid.
His "sleeper" in the league is a bit more surprising.
Herbstreit selected Missouri for that designation. The Tigers had a brutal 1-5 start to 2017 that had some wondering if Barry Odom was the man for the job, before ripping off six straight wins to finish the regular season, clinching a bowl berth and 4-4 SEC record.
The Tigers have a high-flying offense, and bring back quarterback Drew Lock. The defense was better during the winning streak, but also had the benefit of facing lesser offenses like Idaho, UConn, Florida, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt during that run. Arkansas put up 45 points in a losing effort in the regular season finale, while Texas picked up a win in the Texas Bowl against Mizzou, 33-16.
Either way, it is hard to envision them challenging Georgia for the SEC East. The Bulldogs are developing perhaps the most talented program in the country, this side of Alabama.
