On Thursday afternoon, Alabama head coach Nick Saban was asked who the best quarterback he’s ever seen at the collegiate level.
The Crimson Tide coach gave an honest reply: Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence.
According to Alabama insider Cecil Hurts, Saban said Lawrence gave the Tide all they could handle in the national title game last season.
“Trevor Lawrence played about as well against us in the championship game as anybody we’ve seen in recent times,” Saban said.

During his time as a head coach in college football, Saban has faced his fair share of elite quarterbacks. Just last season he saw what Kyler Murray could do in the College Football Playoff.
There’s also former Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel, who gave Saban fits. Oh, and we can’t forget his battles against Deshaun Watson.
However, perhaps no quarterback was as dominant against a Saban-led team than Lawrence. The star freshman passed for 347 yards and three touchdowns as the Tigers dominated the Tide in a 44-16 win.
Lawrence is poised to assert his dominance of the ACC for at least two more years. Clemson enters the 2019 season as a favorite to make the College Football Playoff once again.
An Alabama-Clemson national title rematch (again) is just what the doctor ordered.
