Video: Nick Saban Comments On A.J. McCarron, Says He Was 3rd-Or-4th Best QB In Draft Class

A.J. McCarron was the ninth quarterback selected in the 2014 NFL Draft. The Cincinnati Bengals took the former Alabama quarterback with the 24th pick in the fifth round. Since the draft weekend, McCarron has taken some criticism, as he's voiced his opinion more than many would like

McCarron's college coach, Nick Saban, commented on his former quarterback's selection. Saban said McCarron was the "third-or-fourth best quarterback" in the draft class.

Here's the full video of Saban speaking with reporters Tuesday evening.

McCarron went 36-4 as a starter at Alabama and helped Saban win a couple national championships. He was never projected to be a first-or-early second round pick, but his fall to the fifth round surprised many, including Saban.

"I think AJ was probably the third- or fourth-best quarterback in this draft," Saban said in Mobile, Alabama, for the Crimson Caravan. "He did a fantastic job for us. I certainly think he is going to be a great pro player and have a very good career."

McCarron slipped, reportedly, because, along with his lacking physical traits, he "rubbed teams the wrong way" during the interview process. Saban responded to those allegations.

"He was a good leader on our team and a good person," Saban said. "Regardless of what he ever said to you or whatever way he left you with an impression, if he could ever help you he would be the first one to be there to do it. I think in the long run he'll have a chance to prove that he can be a good leader and a good quarterback in the National Football League."
