It looks like Auburn is the latest school to name its starting quarterback. Gus Malzahn is rolling with true freshman Bo Nix, according to Auburn Undercover's Brandon Marcello.

Nix beat out redshirt freshman Joey Gatewood for the job. He'll make his collegiate and starting debut against Oregon in the season opener on August 31.

At Pinson (Ala.) Valley High School, Nix was a five-star recruit and the top-ranked dual-threat quarterback in the 2019 class, according to 247Sports' Composite Rankings. He led this team to back-to-back state titles under the tutelage of his father, Patrick Nix.

The elder Nix was a star quarterback at Auburn himself in the 1990s and is the current head coach at Pinson Valley.

Both Nix and Gatewood were high-profile recruits--Gatewood owned a four-star rating and was a top-50 prospect. The reported competition between the two was fierce all spring and summer. Malzahn is scheduled to address the media later this evening. Auburn officially confirmed Nix won the job moments ago on Twitter.

Auburn enters the 2019 season ranked 16th in the Associated Press top 25 poll. They will take on 11th-ranked Oregon in the AdvoCare Classic at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Tex. on August 31.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
