Gus Malzahn and the Auburn Tigers pulled off a thrilling upset victory over Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturday. For one of the few times in his coaching career, Saban was outsmarted by another head coach late in the game.
The Auburn head coach spoke to the media after the game to discuss the Tigers’ massive win. He’s clearly proud of his team.
“We played a great game, we faced adversity,” Malzahn said, via SaturdayDownSouth.com. “We said if we get to the fourth quarter, they’ll do that and we’ll win the game. We got the fourth quarter, I’m proud of our team. This is a good football team.”
That was easily Auburn’s biggest win of the season. There’s nothing sweeter than a rivalry win, but this one comes with an even sweeter result. The Tigers’ victory officially knocks the Alabama Crimson Tide out of the College Football Playoff race. This will be the first time since the CFP’s inception that Alabama is not included.
Auburn’s victory moves the Tigers to 9-3 with the three defeats coming against No. 2 LSU, No. 4 Georgia and No. 11 Florida. Despite the losses, it’s been a special season for Malzahn and QB Bo Nix who has notable wins over No. 5 Alabama and N0. 14 Oregon.
While Nix has had his struggles this season, he showed flashes of brilliance against Alabama on Saturday. Malzahn had high praise for his QB.
“He’s a winner, he’s going to win a championship before he gets out of here,” Malzahn said, via SaturdayDownSouth.com.
It’ll be interesting to see if that ends up being true.
Now, the Tigers will await the bowl selection process to find out which team they’ll play next. Either way, it’s been a pretty special season for Auburn.
