Report: Auburn Could Fire AD Jay Jacobs

Auburn may be looking to move on from athletic director Jay Jacobs, who has been in the position since 2005.

Jacobs has overseen some serious success on the athletic fields, with Tigers teams capturing 11 national championships during his tenure.

However, the last year has brought on scandal in the basketball and softball programs, and while Jacobs is not directly involved to public knowledge, the fact that both have happened under his watch have his seat hot.

Form 247Sports:

Jay Jacobs’ time as Auburn athletic director is on the verge of being over, knowledgeable sources told Auburn Undercover on Wednesday.

The only remaining question is when the announcement will come, the sources said.

Jacobs’ support has dwindled in the wake of several incidents, starting with the departure of the previous softball staff after allegations of an improper relationship between former associate head coach Corey Myers and a player. That was followed by the stunning arrest of basketball assistant coach Chuck Person on bribery and fraud charges, an accusation that an academic counselor had taken a test for a former player and a lawsuit alleging discrimination filed by a former track coach

The Auburn athletic director job would be one of the biggest openings in major college sports, and with Gus Malzahn's struggles to get over the hump in recent seasons, and Bruce Pearl's early tenure struggles and the basketball program's connection to the FBI probe, whomever takes over for Jacobs has a chance to make a major impact.
