As we head into the second half of the college football season, ESPN has updated its Football Power Index and which teams have the toughest stretch of games.
Ten teams ultimately stood out as having the toughest schedule in college football. But the teams with the absolute toughest schedules also happen to be among the top contenders for a national title.
Here are the 10 teams with the toughest schedules in college football based on strength of schedule:
8. West Virginia
7. Oregon State
4. Ole Miss
Florida’s presence on the list should come as no surprise. The Gators’ final six games consists of No. 5 LSU, South Carolina, No. 3 Georgia, Vanderbilt, Missouri, and Florida State.
Despite how well they played against Auburn last week, ESPN’s computers don’t think they’ll even be in contention to winning the SEC title, let alone winning out. ESPN’s FPI gives the Gators only a 0.5% chance of winning out and a 4.5% chance of winning the SEC.
LSU, which came in second, was given substantially higher odds in both regards. The Tigers have a 4.8% chance of winning out and a 12.1% chance of winning the SEC.
Michigan’s odds of winning out of winning the Big Ten are slim, but not outside the realm of possibility.
Teams 4-10 were given no chance at all of winning out. Only Colorado and Arizona were given a slight chance of winning their respective conferences.
