Most connect FOX Sports college football analyst Urban Meyer with his last stop, Ohio State. He has been pretty vocal about his continued love for the job he held before that too, the Florida Gators.
The Gators are involved in what is probably the day’s biggest game this afternoon. At 3:30, the No. 10 Gators host No. 7 Auburn, the team that probably has the best early season resume of any in college football.
Auburn is a slight road favorite in the swamp. The Tigers are -2.5-point favorites entering the game.
Meyer doesn’t think you should count out the Gators at home, though.
Auburn is coming off of an impressive demolishing of Mississippi State, 56-23. Florida dispatched of FCS squad Towson, 38-0. There isn’t a ton to be gleaned from an FCS game, but Meyer thinks that Florida will be particularly well prepared for Auburn because of who the Gators had last week.
Urban Meyer believes Florida’s full concentration has been on the Auburn game over the last two weeks, and it was actually better than a bye week because the players were fully engaged the entire time.
He predicted a close Florida win this afternoon during FOX’s college football pregame show. Via 247Sports:
“We gave Florida a hard time for playing Towson, but don’t devalue that (compared to) a bye week,” said Meyer, a former Gators coach in his own right. “I’m telling you right now, there’s no chance that Dan Mullen and that staff, they were working for two weeks on this game. And not only working two weeks, but I bet they didn’t even watch film on Towson. This is all about Auburn. Giving a team two weeks, this is better than a bye week because a bye week you have to give players off. They worked right through it. They played the game. I like the Gators in a very-close game. Home-field advantage is going to be huge there. I love Bo Nix, but I just think the Florida defense and environment will keep it close. Offensively, they’ll do enough to win by a slight margin at the end.”
Florida can be a very difficult place to play when the Gators are good. The Gators do have questions on offense once again, with backup quarterback Kyle Trask stepping into the starting role due to the Feleipe Franks injury. Auburn has already knocked off Oregon and Texas A&M on the road.
We should learn a lot from the battle in Gainesville today. CBS is on hand for the coverage at 3:30 p.m. ET.
