There's no shortage of quality running backs in this year's NFL Draft. ESPN's Todd McShay likes one prospect above the rest: Georgia running back D'Andre Swift.
Swift had a solid showing in Indianapolis at last week's NFL Scouting Combine. He ran a 4.48 40-yard dash, posting a 35.5-inch vertical and 121-inch broad jump. He measured in at 5-foot-8, 212 pounds, so he's pretty well built for a shorter, quick back.
Georgia has a strong recent history of highly-drafted running backs. Todd Gurley went first round in 2015, and in 2018, the school produced a pair of top-two round rushers. Sony Michel was taken No. 31 overall by the New England Patriots and Nick Chubb went four picks later to the Cleveland Browns.
McShay apparently likes Swift more than those guys. On a conference call this morning, he said that Swift is "better than the recent first and second-rounders they've had." After a few years where teams were loath to take backs high in the draft, they've started to do it more, provided those backs can do it all, and not just carry the ball between the tackles. McShay thinks Swift is that kind of player.
McShay has D'Andre Swift going in the top 15 picks of the first round in his post-NFL Combine mock draft. That is available to ESPN+ subscribers.
More from McShay on Swift, compared to the rest of the position, via 247Sports:
“Swift is explosive,” McShay said Tuesday on a conference call. "They’ve had so many good backs come out of Georgia. I'm not saying he’s the best, but he’s better than the recent first and second-rounders they've had. He does everything at full speed. Whether it's transitioning from after catch, to reading blocks, to making that cutback. … he’s explosive.
"The running back group, even though we may only have one in the first round with Swift in my opinion, JK Dobbins is a stud. Jonathan Taylor is (great). And if you ask Joe Burrow who the best player is he has ever played with, he says (Clyde) Edwards-Helaire. Swift is just a notch above those guys because he’s complete. It’s easy to see on tape.”
Swift is the only running back McShay has going first round this year. There could be a litany of quality second and third-round options for teams at that spot.
