It took until Saturday afternoon, but we’ve got our first buzzer beater in the 2019 NCAA Tournament. LSU sophomore Tremont Waters hit an unreal layup with one second left to knock off Maryland and send his team to the Sweet 16.
Waters, with the score tied 67-67, took on virtually the entire Maryland defense to hit a running layup just before time expired. Maryland’s Eric Ayala air-balled a three-quarter court shot afterwards.
Waters finished with 12 points and five assists. The Tigers had six players who scored at least seven points.
Neither team shot particularly well during the contest. LSU finished 24-of-65 at just under 37%. Maryland was worse, shooting 21-of-63 to come in at just over 33%.
Here’s the final sequence. Waters hits the shot despite what seems like a very tough angle.

LSU’s victory means the Tigers will take on the winner of Michigan State vs. Minnesota in the Sweet 16. The Spartans and Golden Gophers are set to do battle on Saturday afternoon.
Maryland, meanwhile, will finish the season with a 23-11 record.
