The biggest news in college football this past weekend came from Ole Miss, as the program announced that it hired Lane Kiffin to be the next head coach. It’ll be his third stint in the SEC.
Kiffin spent the past three seasons building Florida Atlantic’s program. Prior to taking the job with the Rebels, he led the Owls to 10 wins and a conference title.
While the majority of analysts believe this hire by Ole Miss is great for college football, ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit does realize there’s a risk factor in this.
Herbstreit discussed how Ole Miss is rolling the dice with Kiffin on his weekly podcast. He made it clear that Ole Miss needs its new coach to be mature and focus on recruiting.
Although Herbstreit did admit it’s a risky hire by Ole Miss, he does think it comes with a ton of benefits.
Here’s what Herbstreit had to say about the hire, via 247Sports:
“Ole Miss is rolling the dice here,” Herbstreit said. “I think there’s tremendous upside on he can do and what he can do as a play caller and the job he’ll do in recruiting. He’s going to shake it up a little bit in Oxford. He’s going to shake it up in the SEC West. We had him on our selection show the other day, and he said all of the right things.”
Ole Miss has struggled the past few seasons under Matt Luke. We’ll see if the Rebels can immediately bounce back with Kiffin at the helm.
Do you think Ole Miss made the right decision by hiring Kiffin?
