Lane Kiffin to Ole Miss is incredibly fun now, months before he has to coach a game. When the season rolls around, he will really have his work cut out for him.
The SEC West remains among the most daunting divisions in all of college football. When Alabama was the clear top dog, that was already the case. The emergence of LSU probably kicks things up to a new level.
Kiffin is very aware of the situations with both of those schools. The former Tennessee and USC head coach served as offensive coordinator at Alabama, a position that helped rejuvenate his career.
He is reportedly still salty about how things ended. After he had taken the head coaching job at FAU, Nick Saban essentially sent him packing ahead of the College Football Playoff, which he planned to stay on to coach at ‘Bama.
LSU’s Ed Orgeron worked for Kiffin at Tennessee and USC, and is one of his better friends in coaching. He also happens to be the former head coach at Ole Miss.
Kiffin has those two programs in his sights. He loves to stir things up on Twitter, and had a pretty interesting tweet today, with LSU memorabilia from an office, and an Alabama plane.

Lane Kiffin followed up that tweet, saying he is “in BR.” It is assumed that he saw this stuff in Boca Raton, where FAU is located, and that he is not in Baton Rouge. Alabama and LSU could be recruiting in that area of Florida, though it isn’t immediately clear what Kiffin was going for here.
If anything, it serves as a reminder and a preview for some of the new intriguing coaching showdowns we’ll get next fall.
Ole Miss travels to LSU on Sept. 26, and hosts Alabama one week later, on Oct. 3. Those two games come right after a home game against Auburn on Sept. 19. The Rebels open their season with Big 12 finalist Baylor on Sept. 5. It is about as difficult a start to a season, and coaching tenure, as you’ll get anywhere.
