According to the Columbia Daily Tribune's Dave Matter, head football coach Gary Pinkel will return for the 2013 season.
This does not come as much of a surprise by most Mizzou fans, even amid unattributed rumors on Twitter that Pinkel would step down this week. Pinkel, who coached the Tigers to a disappointing 5-7 debut in the Southeastern Conference, had previously commandeered Mizzou to seven consecutive bowl seasons. He has been credited for reviving a program that struggled in the 1990's prior to his arrival.
Athletic Director Mike Alden, from whom Matter received word that Pinkel's job was safe, appeared to never have entertained the idea of firing Coach Pinkel. When asked about Pinkel, Alden committed to him for the foreseeable future.
"With Gary, we're going to do everything we can to keep supporting him and do everything he needs to make sure he has the tools necessary to continue to build the program. We never questioned that."
