We’re still less than three months away from kickoff in the college football season, but the season officially started today – in Las Vegas, at least. Golden Nugget released point spreads for its “250 College Football Games of the Year” on Friday morning.
The lines will obviously change closer to the actually date of the games due to injuries, suspensions and other factors in play. However, this is a great way to see which teams oddsmakers in Vegas like and don’t like.
Lines for four Missouri games were released today and the Tigers are underdogs in each game. They are an 18-point underdog at Georgia, a 6-point underdog against Florida, a 7-point underdog against South Carolina and a 13-point underdog against Texas A&M. The Florida, South Carolina and Texas A&M games are home games for MIssouri.
It’s understandable that Vegas doesn’t like Missouri early on. Coming off of a 5-7 season, there are a lot of question marks on the team; like the consistency of James Franklin, the chemistry of the offensive line and who is going to be the star on defense to replace Sheldon Richardson.
I can see the Georgia line staying around 18 points. The Tigers will travel to Athens a week after playing at Vanderbilt. The Bulldogs return quarterback Aaron Murray and the game could increase to a three touchdown spread if half the Bulldogs defense doesn’t get suspended.
The other games are all at Faurot Field. Despite four losses at home in 2012, the Tigers have been a much better team at home than on the road in recent years. I think all these lines will go down by the time the games are played, especially the Texas A&M game. That game is the last of the regular season, which means the Tigers might be extra motivated fighting for bowl eligibility and maybe Gary Pinkel’s job.
Another notable SEC spread is Alabama as a 6-point favorite on the road against Texas A&M. Expect this September 14 game to get a week of “Game of the Century” coverage from ESPN.
