SEC Basketball Tournament: Start Date, Game Times, Bracket, Location

SEC logo.

March Madness is right around the corner, and it is just about time to get brackets ready. But first, it is conference tournament season, which can often be incredibly entertaining as well. SEC basketball has been dominated by Kentucky for years, but 2016 has been one of the more interesting seasons the league has had in a while. Texas A&M has had a breakout season, while other programs like Alabama, LSU, South Carolina, and Vanderbilt have been competitive. Next Wednesday, the league begins its conference tournament.

SEC regular season play is not done just yet, and the standings are still in flux but here is what we know so far:

  • Texas A&M and Kentucky are tied atop the SEC standings at 12-5 in conference. The Aggies hold the tiebreaker over the Wildcats after winning the head-to-head match-up on February 21, 79-77 in overtime.
  • LSU, South Carolina, and Vanderbilt each have six losses in conference play. Texas A&M and Vanderbilt play their season finale on Saturday, March 5. LSU finishes at Kentucky at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The Gamecocks have two more games: at Georgia on Thursday night, and at Arkansas on Saturday at 5 p.m.
  • Missouri, which is currently last in the SEC, will not participate in the SEC Tournament. The Tigers vacated their 2013-14 season, and self-imposed a post-season ban for this season due to significant NCAA violations.
  • This year's tournament will be held at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn.
  • The first three rounds of tournament will be broadcast on SEC Network. The semifinals and championship game will be on ESPN.

Here's the full bracket, via the SEC. The tournament's first game will be held on Wednesday, March 9 at 7:00 p.m. ET. The championship game is set to tip off at noon on Sunday, March 13. The SEC bracket will be set after the Florida-Missouri game at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday

More SEC Tournament notes:

  • Kentucky won the 2015 tournament, beating Arkansas 78-63 in the championship game. Florida edged out Kentucky in the 2014 championship, 61-60.
  • Kentucky has by far the most SEC tournament championships, with 28 total. Alabama is in second, with six total, the last coming in 1991.
  • Missouri, South Carolina, and Texas A&M have never won the SEC Tournament. The Gamecocks joined the conference before the 1992 season, while Missouri and Texas A&M joined in 2012.
  • SEC Tournament tickets are available via StubHub.

Will Kentucky capture the title yet again, or will Texas A&M outlast the Wildcats? Or, of course, can LSU's Ben Simmons lead the Tigers on a miracle run and get back into the NCAA Tournament conversation? We'll find out next week.
