The South Carolina Gamecocks are pretty well situated at quarterback. The team currently has one of the better throwers in the SEC in Jake Bentley, and just added a blue-chip QB for the third straight recruiting class, in 2020 recruit Luke Doty.
Doty, a Myrtle Beach native, made the trip to Columbia over the weekend. He's been to the in-state SEC school multiple times, including a camp back in June.
After the most recent trip, Doty apparently decided that he was ready to call it. A few minutes ago, he announced his commitment on Twitter.
Luke Doty is ranked as the No. 6 dual-threat quarterback in the country.
247Sports has him as a four-star player. He's the No. 6 recruit from the Palmetto State, and No. 305 overall.
After the June camp, he complimented lead recruiter Dan Werner, who is set to be his quarterbacks coach with the Gamecocks. From 247:
“It was really fun. It was really good. The coaching environment and everybody there was amazing,” Doty said in June. “Coach Werner was great. I spent most of my time with him. … It was really good to get some coaching from him and just see how he does things, as far as a practice environment goes.”
“They just kept reiterating to me that I’m their guy and I’m No. 1 on their board right now, as far as 2020 goes,” Doty said. “They really want me at South Carolina.”
Will Muschamp struggled to field a competitive offense while at Florida, and scoring has been an issue thus far at South Carolina. It does seem like he's doing well in accruing quarterback talent, though.
Bentley is expected to be one of the conference's best quarterbacks this fall as a junior. Muschamp's staff has done a nice job of building positional depth behind him.
This year, the team adds No. 9 dual-threat quarterback Dakereon Joyner. Next year, Ryan Hilinski is set to sign with the Gamecocks. He's the No. 2 pro-style quarterback in 2019. Doty makes it three straight years with a blue-chip quarterback set to join the program.
