Kevin Sumlin Names Kyle Allen Texas A&M's Starting Quarterback For Opener vs. Arizona State

Today is a big one for many of college football's high profile quarterback battles. Earlier, reports emerged that Oklahoma is prepared to name Texas Tech transfer Baker Mayfield as its starter. Texas A&M's QB race probably didn't have quite the same drama, but today Kevin Sumlin officially declared Kyle Allen as the starter for the season opener against Arizona State.

Allen, who played in nine games as a true freshman, eventually supplanting Kenny Hill as the Aggies starter, threw for 1,322 yards, 16 touchdowns, and seven interceptions last season. He beat out highly touted true freshman Kyler Murray and sophomore Jake Hubenak for the job.

A&M opens the season in the AdvoCare Texas Kickoff at Houston's NRG Stadium on September 5 at 7 p.m.
