Only three other stadiums will host as many FIFA World Cup games as MetLife Stadium this summer and the NJ Transit system is going to be absolutely slammed for those games. Unfortunately, the price to use the system is going to be sky high – and even higher than previously rumored.
According to Margaret Fleming of Front Office Sports, New Jersey authorities and World Cup organizers have confirmed the matchday transit costs. The NJ Transit train will cost $150 each for the 40,000 fans expected for each match. A separate shuttle bus will cost $80 each for 10,000 fans commuting.
“I’m at the press briefing where New Jersey authorities and World Cup organizers confirmed match day transit costs. The NJ Transit train will cost $150 each for 40,000 fans per match. The host committee’s shuttle bus will cost $80 each for 10,000 fans,” Fleming wrote.
Fan Fury
Soccer fans were downright offended over how much the transportation is going to cost for the event:
“Literally should not be legal to do this with public transportation. Really sad,” one user remarked on X.
“Don’t let fans park at the stadium, then price gouge them the only other way you can go to the stadium? $150 for a train ticket and $80 for a bus?!?!?!?! Being a fan sucks because every one is trying to rip you off.,” another declared.
“It costs $150 per passenger? Are you laying down new tracks just for the game?” a third mocked.
Mass transit is supposed to be designed to handle this exact thing. MetLife Stadium and other stadiums typically get tens of thousands of fans for NFL and college football games and the fact that demand is high shouldn’t be forcing the prices up this high.
Worse still, people are going to hold this against the mass transit service for years to come if they ever deal with financial difficulties.
