Robert Griffin III, Wife Photo Went Viral Days Before ESPN Firing
Robert Griffin III was let go by ESPN Thursday, reportedly with two years remaining on his current contract.
According to a report from Andrew Marchand of The Athletic, Griffin and Sam Ponder were fired for cost-cutting purposes. Both on-air personalities reportedly made over $1 million per year.
However, when news broke that Griffin was being sent packing, some people thought it might have something to do with a recent social media post he was featured in.
While attending the Olympics in Paris with his wife Grete last week, Griffin posed for a photo with an oversized croissant. He and Grete each have one end of the croissant in their mouth, and Griffin looks as if...yeah just take a look and you'll understand.
"And we thought everything was bigger in Texas🤯👀," Grete wrote in the caption.
"Can’t even eat a croissant with your wife anymore," RGIII replied in the comments.
Slightly inappropriate, but a fireable offense? It doesn't seem that way, unless ESPN is not being upfront as to why it got rid of Griffin, which is of course possible.
Griffin had been hired at the Worldwide Leader in 2021 and immediately began climbing the ranks as a game analyst. The former Heisman Trophy Winner and No. 2 overall NFL Draft pick was regarded as a possible rising star, though his light seemed to fade of late.
Even with his dismissal on Thursday, we wouldn't expect to find Griffin out of work in the media world for very long.
