Former World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki Announces Decision On Career

Former Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki retired from competitive tennis in January of 2020. Although she has been an excellent commentator for ESPN over the past few years, she has decided she wants to make a comeback.

That's right, Wozniacki announced Thursday that she's returning to the court.

"Over these past three years away from the game I got to make up for lost time with my family, I became a mother and now have two beautiful children I am so grateful for," Wozniacki said. "But I still have goals I want to accomplish. I want to show my kids that you can pursue your dreams no matter your age or role. We decided as a family it’s time. I’m coming back to play and I can’t wait!"

Wozniacki was the No. 1 player in the world at the height of her powers. At 32 years old, she believes there's still gas left in the tank.

Wozniacki is targeting the Canadian Open in August for her official return.

If all goes well, Wozniacki could participate in the US Open in New York. She's a two-time finalist at the Flushing-based event.

Even though Wozniacki hasn't played against elite competition in years, she's not nervous about coming back.

"Am I nervous? Not really," Wozniacki said. "I'm coming back to something I love. Yes, I'll be nervous before a match; I'm okay with that. I'm great with that. Can I win the US Open? I think so. Can I win the Australian Open? I think so. That's why I'm doing this. And I guess we'll see what happens."
