Sean Payton is no longer a head coach in the NFL - for now.

Payton stepped down from his position as head coach of the New Orleans Saints on Tuesday. The stunning announcement was almost immediately followed by speculation about his future.

There's a wide belief Payton will get into the TV business for at least a year. What then? Believe it or not, there's speculation he could be coaching the Dallas Cowboys in 2023.

Here's what Colin Cowherd had to say about the possibility:

"Sean Payton has a home in Dallas, used to be on the Cowboys' staff, has relationships there, spends a lot of time there. Jerry [Jones] loves him. I think that would be the No. 1 choice," Cowherd said regarding the Payton-Cowboys speculation. "Dallas has a good roster. Now, Sean Payton has three years left on his contract. So the Cowboys would have to trade to get him. But they've got a lot of good pieces. ... Sean Payton's the type of guy that can take a quarterback like Dak [Prescott] and move him a half a grade. ... Dallas make a ton of sense."

The Cowboys probably won't be the only team gunning for Sean Payton down the road. Colin Cowherd also believes the Raiders could get in the mix.

Payton's relationships with the Dallas Cowboys could be the tipping point, though.

This is just the start of what will transform into ongoing speculation regarding Payton's future.
